For the second year, Promats Athletics was chosen to transform a baseball park into a temporary MLB stadium for the organization’s special regular-season game that celebrates family, community, and of course, baseball.
The “MLB Little League Classic,” scheduled for August 20 in Williamsport, PA, will feature the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field. In March, MLB Commissioner, Rob Manfred announced the event as a way to “create lifelong memories for the Little Leaguers, their families and the city of Williamsport.” The game, which coincides with the Little League Baseball World Series will be televised by ESPN.
“Promats Athletics’ role is to transform the 91-year-old ballpark into a MLB level venue,” explained Stuart Perkins, Project Manager at Promats Athletics. Perkins said that the company is providing customized Zone Wall Pads and an Ultra Cross® Braided Dyneema® netting system, among other items.
In the first phase, an entirely new backstop system using Ultra Cross® Netting was installed in time for the June 20 season opener for the ball park’s primary tenants, the Williamsport Crosscutters. Protecting fans in the entire lower seating bowl, Ultra Cross® is renowned for its proven strength and nearly invisible, knotless profile, which has made it a standard at major stadiums across the United States.
Next, Promats Athletics installed wall padding along the foul lines, dugout rails, and on the new fenced-in bullpens. Perkins explained that the last phase will take place in mid-August when the entire outfield wall will get a significant safety upgrade and aesthetic make-over. To cover the 12’ outfield walls, Promats Athletics created a customized system of 4’ and 8’ pads connected by brackets. Completed, the 113 pads used in the system will feature the 16 regional logos of Little League Baseball and the special logo of the Little League Classic digitally printed on cobalt blue vinyl. “Our pads are going to look really sharp out there on the field,” Perkins said.
Promats also aided in the transformation of BB&T Ballpark by supplying new foul poles and custom helmet and bat cubbies for the dugouts. In 2016, Promats Athletics equipped another temporary MLB stadium at the Fort Bragg military base for a similar family-style event. The Fort Bragg Game was the first of its kind and featured the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins, as well as Promats Athletics Zone Wall Pads, an Ultra Cross® baseball netting system, and foul poles.
